| Quincy Judge Encourages 209a Complaints |
Even though the domestic abuse law MGL 209a is a horror unto itself it's apparent some judges believe it is their duty to make it even worse-taking it upon themselves to encourge women to request extensions of the order before hearing any evidence whatsoever. Judge Coven of Quincy District Court is one such judge. Here's a letter he wrote to one woman who took out an abuse order in which he says "For your continued protection, we urge that you appear on the scheduled hearing date and request a further extension extension of the present order." He goes on to say that if the woman is "unable to appear in person" she can simply pick up the phone and have the order extended. How easy it is to keep a man no longer presumed innocent until found guilty in place!
Is this part of a strategy to keep his restraining order numbers up to secure federal monies for jobs at the courthouse or has Judge Coven lost all sense of judicial proportion? Or both?
